New Instagram Feature

Instagram is becoming a lot more like the Facebook Messenger app. It now lets you see when a person was “Last Active” on Instagram.

The feature rolled out as part of the latest updates for Android and iOS – so at least you know everyone is getting the same deal.

Don’t forget, that Facebook bought Instagram back in 2012. So, it doesn’t surprise me that both social media networks have similar features.

Some might find this creepy. Other’s might not care at all.

If this does bother you, in today’s post, I will show you how to turn the Instragam “Active Status” feature off.

How do I see who’s active on Instagram?

You can see when people you follow or send direct messages to were last active on Instagram, and they can see when you were last active. You can control the visibility of your activity status in Settings.

To see who’s active on Instagram, tap to go to your Direct inbox. Below someone’s username, you’ll see their most recent activity status (Example: Active 25m ago, Active yesterday, Seen, Typing…).

To change the visibility of your activity status:

  1. Go to your profile and tap (iOS) or (Android) in the top right
  2. Scroll down to Settings.
  3. Next to Show Activity Status, tap . Keep in mind that when you turn off your activity status, you won’t be able to see anyone else’s.

Note: Only the people you follow and send direct messages to can see your activity status.

As a social media manager, it’s always interesting to see how people respond to changes in their favourite social media network. Changes are bound to happen and they happen fast!

But, what I do like, is that more often than not, most networks provide a way for you to opt-out of these type of features. This gives you a little more control over what you want or does not want to share with your friends, family and followers. In this case, Instagram gives you one.

What are your thoughts on the “Active Status” feature? Will you be turning this off on your Instagram app? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Hi Rosie, I hate the fact that people can see my activity (or lack of) on social media and I’m not interested in seeing other peoples activity either, so this post is a big help and I will be opting out.

Thank you for sharing your post!

    1. Not weird at all. Most social media channels update so frequently that it can be difficult to keep up-to-date on the changes. Thankfully, there is an opt-out on this feature!

    1. Quite a few people haven’t heard of this latest update. As a social media coach, it’s my job to inform and then allow you to make the decision. BTW..I love what I do!

    1. Hi Liberty, thank you for your kind comments on my website design. It’s a work in progress! 🙂 Feel free to look around and ask if you have any questions!

    1. Maria, your website is absolutely stunning! The new update on Instagram has certainly been a discussion piece online the last week or so. You can try leaving it on. Maybe most people aren’t that nosy or care that you’re online or not? Or if you are getting messages about being online, then turn the button off?

  2. Thank you! I was just trying to figure out how to change this. People tend to get offended if they see you are active and you are not responding right away. I like to avoid these times. #AnythingGoes

    1. Oh Heather, I am with you on this one! It’s funny, how many people feel businesses should be replying promptly. Thanks for your comments and shares on Twitter..much appreciated!! 🙂

  3. It’s an interesting question and I’ve been wondering whether to leave it or turn it off. I’m probably only on Instagram a couple of times a day, so I’m thinking that leaving it on at least alerts people to the fact I’m not ignoring them. But most people that I know who blog are turning it off.

    1. Hi Bernie, thanks for stopping by and ocmmenting. I agree, it’s certainly an individual decision as it has its advantages and disadvantages.
